This course simulates the real-life engineering experience as it involves a group-based project (a design exercise) which consists of all the stages of a typical engineering project. Students in this course start off with a project idea, followed by its planning and development to its execution. In this course, students are introduced to health and safety issues in the laboratory, on the field and required documentations to address them. Students are introduced to the environmental concerns and sustainability issues facing engineering projects and are encouraged to use materials with low carbon footprints such as recycled materials. The properties, advantages and disadvantages of using various engineering materials will be presented. Students are also introduced to 3-D computer modeling, building computer assembly models, multiviews, dimensioning, tolerancing and engineering drawings. In addition, the course provides an introduction to CAD analysis tools and effective communication.
