This course introduces students to major works and thinkers in the history of political philosophy, examining fundamental questions about justice, power, authority, freedom, and the state. Through close reading and discussion of classic texts by Plato, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Machiavelli, Marx, and Adam Smith, students will explore enduring debates on human nature, the origins of political society, rights, property, and the legitimacy of government. The course emphasizes both the historical context of these ideas and their continuing relevance to modern political and ethical issues. Students will develop critical thinking and analytical skills through class discussions, written assignments, oral examinations, and presentations.
