
The purpose of this course is to build students’ academic reading and vocabulary skills. Students exiting this course are expected to be able to read article to chapter length academic texts on a variety of topics. Students will receive instruction for reading strategies and academic vocabulary acquisition, as well as university study skills and critical/analytical thinking. They will be exposed to texts on a variety of academic topics, which may include astronomy, economics, archeology, linguistics, biology, history, philosophy, and geography. Other genres may be included as supplemental course readings. Daily class activity and extension assignments will provide students with approximately 18 hours a week of reading practice.
