This course is a specialized pharmacy profession course and delivers the basic knowledge to students about different chemical classes of naturally derived medicines and toxins from their botanical, microbial, and other natural sources. Furthermore, it provides the learners with the enzymatic biosynthetic pathways, an insight into the chemistry of natural products and secondary metabolites with their therapeutic utilizations, pharmacological activities, structure-activity relationships, and abuse.
The course includes the screening for bioactive "Hit" molecules, separation techniques, and "Lead" characterization through the drug discovery and development process. Natural toxins and the common investigation methods applied in crime scenes will also be discussed.
