
This course provides a historical and analytical survey of the modern Middle East, tracing major political, social, and intellectual transformations from the rise of Islam to contemporary conflicts and movements. Topics include the development of Islamic civilization, imperial rule and reform, nationalism, colonialism and decolonization, authoritarianism, revolutions, political Islam, the Arab–Israeli conflict, oil and state formation, jihadism, and the Arab uprisings. Special attention is given to the Kurdish question and the role of regional and international actors in shaping Middle Eastern politics. Through engagement with historical texts, scholarly interpretations, and contemporary case studies, students will develop critical skills for understanding the complexities and ongoing challenges of the region.
